I am not a plastic bag

And neither are you. Neither is my trusty canvas tote. But with global awareness increasing and plastic bags "suddenly as bad as cigarettes," I.D. magazine's Bradford McKee maintains that "designers of creature comforts are on the line for every carbon-footed step they take." So, today I come together with a little bit of research with some alternatives to the ever present Target, Food Lion, and Eckerd's bags we all seem to bring home.

This is Anya Hindmarch's original, sold for 5 pounds or $10 in the local market. "As a luxury fashion brand we are in a position where we can influence. I can't think of a more positive way to do this than producing a desirable and cost effective alternative to a plastic carrier bag."

A project of the enterprising pair Rachel Rheingold (a fashion stylist) and Michael Berick (a cartographer), these bags are not only geographically appropriate (depending on where you are), they are super cute.

Bags, $6 at weatherandnoise.etsy.com. So cute, and the typography is awesome. Available in a range of great colors!

These three totes are handmade by rainbowswirlz.etsy.com and they are eco-conscious and deliciously dry humor-filled.

So I've put a bunch out for you as options. Believe me there are tons and tons more out there. Gorgeous ranges from expensive to not so much, made out of every fabric you could possibly conceive of. Please do yourself and your world a favor - say to that checkout boy that "no thanks," you've got your own bag.
